never let it be said i resisted a good meme

(borrowed from [livejournal.com profile] affectingly )

The Hypothetical AU Meme:

Take any one of the fandoms you know I write AND give me another time period (Ancient Rome, Regency England, etc.) OR give me a type of AU (space opera AU, pirate AU, superhero AU, etc.). I will then explain what story from that fandom I would AU in that era.

*Clears throat*

ST 2009 of course...particularly the cool kids (Bones, Spock, Kirk, Uhura, Chekov, Scotty, Gaila, Sulu, and we'll toss Chapel in for good measure)

Modern Day AU - Trapped in Suburbia - you can totally make them primetime soap opera material...we're talking the cheesefest from the 80's (Dynasty, Dallas, etc.), the lust from the 90's (Melrose Place, BH90210, etc.), or modern day insanity (Big Love, OTH, GG,) take your pick

Cul-De-Sac

The Houses:
Jim Kirk and his wife Christine Chapel
Spock
Hikaru Sulu and his husband Pavel Chekov
Uhura and her partner Gaila and their couch-hopping friend Scotty

Kirk and Spock are professors in the history department at the local university, Chapel is a nurse at the university hospital, Sulu owns a flower shop, Chekov is a former TV child star who is trying to find his new niche, Uhura is a published poet and also a professor, Gaila teaches high school math, and Scotty is literally a rocket scientist.

Everyone's friends. And if Chekov kissed Gaila that one time or Christine let Spock feel her up that other time or if Jim hits on Uhura on a regular friendly basis - well, it's all good in the cul-de-sac.

Arriving on the scene, filling the empty house in the middle of the circle, and stirring up all kinds of trouble: Dr. Leonard H. McCoy and his wife Jocelyn.

(It's kind of like the bigbang story I never finished last year. That goes sort of like this:)

Her dress is gray.

For reasons both inexplicable and alarmingly specific - Joss' dress is red, red-red, stunning - Christine's first, and repetitive, thought as she watches Jim kiss Joss - with her red-red dress, under the mistletoe, with tongue, one of his hands on her neck - the first thing she thinks of is that her dress is gray, and that the elegant touches of sparkle are not enough.

The second thought comes fast on its heels, as she smooths down the front of her dress and catches Leonard watching, too. Her second thought is Oh, god. I can't be upset about this. Leonard lifts an unhappy eyebrow at her. We can't be upset about this.

It's a kiss under the mistletoe at a Christmas party. It's a small sin in comparison.

Kissing Leonard - more than kissing - in the heat of proximity and the churn of emotions over - what, exactly, she can't remember - but there he'd been and she'd grabbed him and he had held on in return and if she was being honest about it now, she did it, they did it because they could, and as a preemptive strike to what was in front of them right now. Maybe Christine can only speak for herself, her own petty motivations and jealousies. If she is pressing a hand to her stomach right now, it is because of guilt and shock. It is not because fire is twisting through her. It is not because she is remembering the taste of Leonard's mouth or the breadth of his shoulders, the ways he is a man, the same and different than Jim. And it is not at all to keep a rein on the way her body is responding to watching Jim kiss someone else. Kiss Joss.

By the time they pull apart, the kissing couple under the mistletoe, Christine has managed to put a screen over everything she is thinking.

And if she doesn't look at Leonard, in a few seconds she will make a joke, make light of it all, and Jim will kiss her under the mistletoe.
