Title: i saw the sky grow dark
Fandom: LOTR movie-verse
Character(s): Boromir, Denethor, Faramir
Rating: PG
Length: ficlet
Notes: Um. IDEK. Because I watched Fellowship of the Ring last night and Boromir breaks my heart.

son of Gondor

The warrior dies, and he finds redemption. For all his error, for all the darkness that crept into his heart, in the end he finds himself, his true self, that honor and valor can be reclaimed. It is a high cost, and one he finds he is willing to pay. If he regrets anything, it is that he cannot do more now.

With his life, he buys his soul. In the forgiveness of his brother-captain-king, the darkness falls away and there is only light. Never ending.

they will look for his coming from the White Tower

But there are those left behind, and death is no redemption to the living. It is a loss, a growing emptiness.

And the hardest corners of the father's heart become colder, harder. His son, his son, his son is dead. When the emptiness gives completely to the madness, he can feel only relief. To be full of something is better than to be empty with grief.

the clear ringing of silver trumpets

In a reckless ride - not for glory or for honor, not for himself - the brother finds his own way of filling the emptiness. Not with madness, but with grief-tempered resolve. His brother, his friend, his rival, his brother is dead. Their father would continue the war, to tear at the brother with bitter comparison, but in the brother's heart the rivalry is dead, too. He does not compete with a dead brother, he only seeks to do right, to protect, and to prove to himself the faith of the brother who is gone.

a pale light lingered

If there are other hearts bereft, left full of only emptiness and a well of tears, it is not for them to show it. The warrior would ask only that they go on, and live.

The night is full of sorrows, but the morning breaks and the day is for living.

but he will not return

Some will find rest, or peace, or death, or redemption, or life.

The warrior finds rest and the world finds peace. And the warrior does not regret.

Thank you! This was spurred by the characters, certainly, but the writing of it ended up being more personal and cathartic than I had anticipated.

Ahah whoot! No rush my dear! The fic can't even go live until Sept 30th I think? (Assuming I can get the last dratted chapter written. I'm hovering at 21.5k. Which is certainly better than the 20k I was stuck at, but still not where I need to be. Blah)
